Kyokushin was founded by Sosai Matsutatsu Oyama, born on July 12, 1923 in Qa Ryong Ri, Yong Chi Myo’n, Chul Na Do, South Korea. He was born by the name of Young Li (Hyung Ye), but after he had migrated to Japan, he had to change his name into Japanese. He chose the name Oyama, which means “The Great Mountain”.

The beginning of Kyokushin, started by a Dojo officially established in June 1964 - which would become the headquarters of all Dojos all around the globe – named itself “Kyokushin” which means “The Ultimate Truth”. Then soon Kyokushin has been broaden to more than 120 countries with its more than 12 millions of listed members (1998) and became the world’s biggest martial art organization.

Masutatsu Oyama passed away on April 26, 1994 caused by lung cancer, even though he was not a smoker. A decade after his death, 12 millions International Karate Organization members he had built, became fragmented several times into smaller organizations.

In 2002, Hatsuo Royama, one of Masutatsu Oyama’s first students from Oyama Dojo era, along with his friends and followers separated themselves from the Sosai followers’ biggest organization – KYOKUSHINKAIKAN - and founded a new organization named KYOKUSHIN-KAN.

In Indonesia, Kyokushin karate martial art primarily formed as Pembinaan Mental Karate Kyokushinkai Karate-do Indonesia, founded by Shihan Nardi T Nirwanto SA. On May 7th, 1967 di Batu, Malang.

Then, it fragmented into two in 1982, leading a new karate martial art organization, named Indonesia Karate-Do Kyokushinkaikan, led by Senpai J.B. Sujoto. In the early 2008 Indonesia Karate-Do Kyokushinkaikan organization was fragmented once again because of the replacement Sensei H Agung Pramono – appointed by Kancho Shokei Matsui - as the new Branch Chief for Kyokushinkaikan Karate Organization in Indonesia, replacing the former branch chief, J.B Sujoto.

In the same year, Sensei Anthony F Pajouw also separated from Kyokushinkaikan Karate Organization in Indonesia, and then on July 1st 2009, Sensei Anthony has been directly appointed by Kancho Hatsuo Royama as a Branch Chief of Indonesia and also to form a new organization – KYOKUSHIN-KAN INDONESIA as an official branch of KYOKUSHIN-KAN INTERNATIONAL JAPAN headquarters up until now.
